SAP Shares Fall, Salesforce Soars on Report

Wedbush analyst Michael Nemeroff offered up conflicting views Tuesday on Salesforce and SAP -- a pair of enterprise software rivals that appear to be headed in opposite directions going into the new decade.

Nemeroff raised Salesforce (NYSE: CRM) from a "neutral" rating to "outperform," saying that the on-demand software vendor has a "strong and stable base of recurring revenue" and "low and very achievable expectations for growing in fiscal 2011."

Earlier this month, Salesforce topped analysts estimates in its latest quarter as year-over-year sales surged more than 20 percent.

Salesforce shares subsequently stormed up to a 52-week high of $67.72 a share earlier this month. In Tuesday afternoon trading, the stock was up $0.39 a share, or 1 percent, to $64.89.

With the Nemeroff upgrade, 19 of the 33 analysts covering Salesforce maintain either a "buy" or "strong buy" recommendation.

Meanwhile, he downgraded SAP from a "neutral" rating to "underperform" and set a 12-month price target of $49 a share.

Nemeroff justified the move by citing the German software giant's "comparatively weak core business fundamentals" which he said will continue for at least the next few quarters.

He also said that incremental growth from the likes of Salesforce and other on-demand enterprise resource planning (ERP) vendors would "chip away at the company's market share and renewal rate" among smaller customers.

SAP, which earlier this week announced that it and Microsoft would team up to selling budgeting, planning and forecasting applications to their shared customers, has seen its stock make steady advances for most of the past year.

SAP shares trimmed $0.38 a share, or 1 percent, to $48.01 in Tuesday trading, down from its peak of $52.73 established last month.

Now 12 of the 16 analysts following SAP maintain either a "hold" or "underperform" rating on the stock.

Office 2010 Beta Testers: One Million Strong

Users are so eager to get their hands on the beta of the next major release of Microsoft Office that they've gone download crazy.

That's the word from a tweet sent by Stephen Elop, president of Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Business Division on Thursday afternoon.

"Office 2010 beta hits 1 million downloads, in just 2 weeks! Very proud," Elop's tweet said. (Tweets on the Twitter microblogging service can only be 140 characters long, so they tend to brutalize good grammar due to its limitations.)

Microsoft officially kicked off the beta test of Office 2010 on November 18 at its annual Professional Developers Conference 2010 in Los Angeles.

Now that the lid is off the jar, increasing numbers of details have started coming out from Microsoft's Office team.

Tuesday, for example, officials confirmed that Office 2010 is slated to ship in June 2010 -- a much more clear statement of intent than Microsoft's previous mantra of "by the end of the first half of the year," which of course, is also the end of June. Still, the Office team has a history of delivering updates to Microsoft's desktop productivity application suite on time.

Prospective testers going gaga over the latest beta of a major Microsoft desktop product is nothing new.

In January 2009, avid testers hungry to kick the tires on the only beta of Windows 7 caused server crashes due to high download demand. Ultimately, Microsoft opened that beta to more than 2.5 million testers.

So far, at least, there have been no reports of server crashes or unavailability for testers downloading Office 2010.

The large numbers of testers involved in Windows 7 as well as limits on changes that could be triggered by beta users' feedback likely had a lot to do with the relatively bug-free release of the new operating system in late October.

While there have been a small handful of security bugs that have been found so far, by and large, Windows 7 has been remarkably clear of the kinds of problems that dogged, for instance, Windows Vista's early days in release.

Users interested in participating in the beta test of Office 2010, can sign up online.

Using Windows Server 2008 as a SUPER workstation OS

Windows Server 2008 is the best OS to be released till date from Microsoft's stable. And the moment I got hold of the RTM build I could not resist installing it on my workstation. Due to the nature of my work I always prefer running a Server OS on my main workstation... I have been running Windows 2003 disguised as XP (with all the themes and stuff) all these days.

So here is my tale of how I went about setting up Windows Server 2008 to look and fell like its desktop counterpart Windows Vista.

1. Enable Hardware Virtualization

My workstation is a x64 machine with hardware virtualization capabilities. This means I can run Hyper-V on my machine. Even if your machine's hardware supports virtualization it is most likely not going to be enabled by default. You have to enable it via your BIOS setup.

2. Install the latest Graphics and Audio drivers

Being a server OS Windows 2008 carries with it basic graphics and audio drivers. To utilize the full strength of your hardware ensure you install the latest drivers for both graphics and audio hardware. Only with the proper graphics drivers will you be able to enable the "Aero" experience on Windows 2008.

3. Desktop Experience Feature

The Desktop Experience Feature enables a bunch of stuff that is by default present on a desktop OS. Most importantly it includes Themes, Windows Media player and the Aero related features. You will have to enable it form the Server Manager. The "Turn Windows features on or off" / "Add remove windows components" has all been rolled into the Server Manager now.

Server Manager > Features > Desktop Experience

Installing the Desktop Experience feature does not enable them. You have to manually set them up.

4. Themes

To enable Themes you will basically have to enable the Themes Service. Again being a server OS it is not enabled by default.

Services.MSC > Themes

Set the start up type to Automatic

Enabling the Aero Theme.

For this go to Control Panel > Personalization >Theme and select Windows Aero

5. Search

Search is also disabled by default on Windows 2008. Searching is important for me as I use it a lot to find my emails. To enable search you will have to add the File Services Role via Server Manager.

Server Manager > Roles > File Services > Windows Search

Outlook relies on this search service.

6. Disable Shutdown Event Tracker

Since I am using it as a workstation I do not want to keep a track of all the Shutdowns. The Shutdown Event Tracker is the pop up that you get asking you for a shutdown reason. To disable it

Open mmc.msc

Add the Group Policy snap-in

Under Administrative Templates expand System

Set Display Shutdown Event Tracer to Disabled

7. Audio

For audio you need to enable the Windows Audio service. You do this by setting the startup type to Automatic.

Services.msc > Windows Audio

Ensure you have proper drivers for your audio hardware... for me the default driver was not enabling the headphones ... it started working fine after I got the proper driver.

8. SuperFetch

As a workstation, enabling SupertFetch will give you that additional bit of responsiveness. The SuperFetch services is disabled by default and when you try to enable it you will most likely get an error message "The operating system is not presently configured to run this application"

You will have to make two registry changes to enable this service. I basically copied them over from my Vista machine.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

EnablePrefetcher DWORD 3

EnableSuperfetch DWORD 3

9. Get a codec pack.

For media hungry buffs download a codec pack. This will ensure you can play all media files.

10. Enable Hyper-V

With Hyper-V you can run virtual machines on your workstation. This is useful if you want to run your tests on older OS versions. Enabling  Hyper-V is easy

Server Manager > Roles > Hyper-V

Remember you need a Hyper-V enabled Windows 2008 licence and also your hardware has to support virtualization.

Also If you are using an existing VHD it may ask you to re-Activate Windows as it detected hardware changes.

One good thing about Windows Server 2008 is that it no longer asks for the i386 folder like Windows 2003 while you enable features.

Understanding PivotTables in Excel 2007

PivotTables enable you to extract meaning from large amounts of data. This description is deceptively simple because in fact PivotTables are powerful and  sophisticated tools that enable you to do things that would be impossible or difficult to do any other way. A PivotTable enables you to take what seems to be an  indecipherable mass of facts and extract any trends and patterns buried in the data. You can organize and summarize your data, perform comparisons, and extract meaningful information that can be
invaluable to you and your organization. A PivotTable can work with data that is located in an Excel workbook and also with data from an external database. This is an important factor because it enables you to analyze data sets that are much too large to be contained in a
workbook. Now that Excel 2007 is here, this point seems less important than in the past.
With a capability of one million rows, it seems probable that most data sets will fit into a workbook easily. A more compelling reason to work with an external database is that it ensures data integrity throughout an organization—not to mention that it is easier than
importing the data into Excel just to create a PivotTable.
Why the term pivot? It comes from an analogy between the way PivotTables work and the way you investigate a physical object. Imagine that you have been handed a complex device and asked to figure out what it does. You don’t just look at it from one angle; rather you turn it in your hands, examining it from all possible perspectives to be sure you do not miss any important clues. PivotTables work the same way, enabling you to turn or pivot the
raw data and examine it from various perspectives to extract the information you need.
Then you also have the option of creating a PivotChart, a graphical representation of the information in a PivotTable.

Suppose you work for a chain of sporting-goods stores. Every day you receive a report from each store that includes complete details on that day’s activities, such as number of customers each hour, sales in each of 30 categories, items returned for refund or exchange,
and number of employees on duty at different times of the day. It won’t be long before your Excel workbook is chock-full of this raw data, but what good does it do you? You could stare at this information for hours without gaining any useful insights from it. But with a PivotTable you can quickly and easily answer the following types of questions:
• Which days of the week show the highest sales?
• Which categories of merchandise sell best at different times of the year?
• Are more employees scheduled to work during periods of the highest customer load?
• Do certain categories of merchandise suffer from unusually high rates of return or exchange?
These are the kinds of questions that a business needs to answer in order to operate efficiently. These are also the kinds of questions that PivotTables are designed to answer. The same kinds of analysis are appropriate for almost any kind of data you can imagine, from
political surveys to weather patterns, from quality control in a manufacturing plant to test scores in a high school. That’s the beauty of PivotTables—they are powerful and flexible.

AbiWord

AbiWord is a free word processor that is licensed under the GNU Public license. It provides most of the features that are normally found in a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) word processor, including spell checking, the ability to have various fonts, as well as displaying on-screen what the document will look like when printed.
The way that AbiWord works is also very similar to most other word processing programs that are available on the market at the moment, and so skills in AbiWord will translate well into skills with most other word processing software.
AbiWord is a full-featured word processor originally developed by the SourceGear Corporation, and is now maintained by a open group of volunteers. The application code is quite mature and stable, and developers are adding new features to development branches daily.

Advantages
Some of the advantages of AbiWord are as follows:

  1.     An open file format: many proprietary word processors use a file-format that is not disclosed.  This means that once you have created a lot of documents using that format it becomes very difficult to change to any other word processor since other programs are not able to read the documents that you have created.  Furthermore, by changing the document format every so often, the vendor is able to force you to purchase the next version - even if there are no useful new features to justify the upgrade cost.
  2. Because it is free software (that is, the source code is freely available), bugs in the program can be fixed much faster because programmers from around the world have access to the code.  It may take much longer to have bugs fixed in proprietary word processors because you must wait for the company that owns the word processor to find the time to assign a programmer to fix it.  Also, the company will often require the users to pay for an upgrade containing fixes to the buggy program whereas bug fixes to free software such as AbiWord are available for no charge.
  3. Another advantage of AbiWord is that, being free software, it is not only legal to share the program with your friends, but sharing the software is actually encouraged.
  4. AbiWord runs on many different operating systems.  This means that if you use AbiWord as your main word processing program, rather than being tied to a particular operating system, you are free to use any other operating system at some point in the future with no problems with transition.  This allows for a great deal of choice when people are deciding what operating system they prefer to use on their computer.
  5. It is easy to use.  AbiWord is designed to work in much the same way as most other easy to use word processors.  Using a combination of menus, icons and the graphical representation of the document on-screen as it will appear on the printed page, AbiWord is a very easy to use word-processing program.
