Mac Users Prefer Linux Over Windows

Apple users are the most dedicated and fervent operating system fans with undying loyalty to their operating system, hardware and peripherals. And they're just as loyal now to the new Unix-based OS X as they were to the old proprietary Mac OS. However, when given the option of a Linux-based computer or a Windows-based one, 100% say they would rather use Linux.
Mac users cite stability, ease of use, reliability, lack of viruses and sleek design as their main reasons that they love their Macs.
I've personally never owned a modern Mac or an iAnything so I can only report what I've been told in a recent survey of Mac users. I do understand, however, their reasons for loving the Mac. I've never been able to afford a Mac product but, if what they say is true then the Mac may pay for itself many times over with uptime and fewer problems.
I do find it funny (strange not haha) that Mac users gave the same reasons given by Microsoft, and its fans, as why someone should love Windows. And those same Windows ads and fans say just the opposite about Linux.
How can it be both ways?
Mac users would rather use Linux because it's more like the Mac OS but Windows users say that Linux is too hard. Something there doesn't make sense to me.
I'm not taking sides on this one but rather only reporting what I've been told.
For the sake of you and other DaniWeb readers, I'd like to hear from Mac users who've also used Linux to find out if my other survey was flawed. Write back and let me know what you think about the following question: If your Mac were unavailable to you and you had a choice of a Windows PC or a Linux PC, which would you choose and why?

10 Tips for a Greener Office

BIXBY, OK -- Standley Systems is offering a list of ways to keep your office green.  On Wednesday the company brought lists of these tips to area businesses hoping they may go green as well.

"We're basically just giving them ten green tips they can do in their current enviornment that doesn't cost hem any money but has a pretty signifigant return" said Director of Sales Greg Coscia.

10 Timely Tips for Going Green

  1. Print double-sided.  If you must print and copy, make documents double-sided. Set this as a default on your printer and computer.
  2. Minimize printer emissions.  Reduce the number of personal desktop printers to minimize printer emissions in the work area.
  3. Maximize computer efficiency.  Make it a habit to turn off your computer, and the power strip it's plugged into, when you leave for the day.
  4. Use electronic cocument management techniques.  Avoid or reduce making copies by using electronic distributions, and retain documents on your computer or server.  Make good use of scanning technology and e-mail attachments instead of faxing.  Don't print draft materials, proofread off of computer or video displays instead.  Encourage the use of online forms rather than paper forms.
  5. Be bright about light.  Make it a habit to turn off lights when you're leaving any room for 15 minutes or more and utilize natural light when you can.
  6. Purchase environmentally preferred products.  Purchase items that are recyclable, made of recycled goods and use less packaging.
  7. Reuse office materials.  Recycle folders, paper clips, envelopes, post-its, hanging folders, batteries, rubber bands, etc. Reuse packaging materials and Styrofoam.
  8. Recycle everything.  Almost all paper types: cardboard, glass, aluminum, plastic, steel, tin, milk boxes, and juice containers are recyclable.  Toner cartridges, batteries, CDs, and floppy disks are also recyclable through recycling centers and manufacturers.
  9. Give preference to locally, regionally or nationally made products.  Buying locally helps conserve fuel, oil, emissions, electricity and other energy sources as well as boosts the local economy.
  10. Develop & publicize written sustainability policies and procedures; mandate employees uphold them.  Executive sponsorship and communication is key!

AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.5.287

AVG continues to be one of the most popular free antivirus programs availableon the internet and it maintains this position with a combination of effectiveprotection and an easy to use interface.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8 improves on both areas, and is an essentialupgrade, as updates will be stopped for the previous version 7.5. If you alreadyhave AVG installed it is best to click on the upgrade option when it is offered. If you have never installed it before, this is the download to use. We wouldrecommend disconnecting from the internet during installation as there will aperiod where there is no protection.

As noted the interface of AVG Free has been improved and it is easier to seewhat protection AVG is providing and what needs attention via icons in the mainpart of the screen. Tabs along the left hand side give quick access to importantinformation on updates and ongoing scans.

In addition to traditional antivirus protection, AVG Free now offersprotection from Spyware without installing extra software.

An extra feature added with AVG 8 is the LinkScanner. Also available as astandalonedownload, LinkScanner works with Internet Explorer and Firefox to checklinks found in Google, Yahoo and MSN searches to make sure that there is no riskto clicking on the links. There is a slight delay as the pages are checked butit is worth the short wait in exchange for avoiding malicious (or hacked) sites.

Ubicom® Provides Flexible, High-Performance Processor Platform with Release of Linux BSP

Linux BSP and Open Source reference designs for networking and multimedia enable rapid development of embedded products

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 30 /-- EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE -- Ubicom(R), Inc., a leading provider of networking and multimedia processors, today announced the release of a Linux Board Support Package (BSP) with a complete implementation of the Linux 2.6.28 SMP kernel, device drivers, GNU tool suite and documentation for rapid development of networking and multimedia products. The BSP includes reference applications for router gateways and networked media players using turnkey open source packages. Additionally, Ubicom provides reference hardware, design files and fabrication data for Router Gateway and Media designs, as well as a CPU development board and personality boards for other applications. All the released hardware and software solutions support the company's latest IP7000(TM) family of processors.

The Ubicom IP7000 family of networking and multimedia processors featuring the UBICOM32(TM) 12-way multithreaded architecture can be clocked at frequencies up to 600MHz, which can deliver two to three times the performance at the same frequency compared with a traditional single-threaded RISC processor. Designers can also use a wider range of interface options via Ubicom's unique software I/O technology. The integrated SIMD video coprocessor and DSP instruction set makes audio and video applications deterministic and less processor-intensive.

The Ubicom Linux BSP allows developers to rapidly deploy existing applications while taking advantage of Ubicom's multithreaded system. Ubicom has enhanced the classic Linux development cycle by providing state of the art tools including: an advanced Ethernet based version of GDB enabling full kernel and driver debugging; Ethernet based user level debugging; a configuration tool enabling developers to quickly configure the Software I/O features of the processor; and an in depth Ethernet based profiler tool. The advanced profiler tool leverages Ubicom's unique multi-threaded architecture to run real time statistical profiling without affecting system performance and collect rich profile data such as CPU and memory utilization per function.

"The demand for flexible high-performance embedded processing continues to grow as networking and media devices evolve," said RK Parthasarathy, vice president of marketing at Ubicom. "The Ubicom Linux BSP for the IP7000 family of processors addresses the needs of embedded developers to efficiently bring solutions to market."

Twitter. what Wikipedia say

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or applications such as Tweetie, Twitterrific, Twitterfon, TweetDeck and feedalizr. The service is free to use over the Internet, but using SMS may incur phone service provider fees.

Since its creation in 2006, Twitter has gained extensive notability and popularity worldwide. It is often described as the "SMS of Internet", in that the site provides the functionality (via its application programming interfaces) for other desktop and web-based applications to send and receive short text messages, often obscuring the Twitter service itself.

Four gateway numbers are currently available for SMS — short codes for the United States, Canada, India, and a United Kingdom-based number for international use. There is also a short code for Vodafone users from the UK. Several third parties offer posting and receiving updates via e-mail.

Estimates of the number of daily users vary as the company does not release the number of active accounts. In November 2008, Jeremiah Owyang of Forrester Research estimated that Twitter had 4-5 million users.[2] A February 2009 Compete.com blog entry ranks Twitter as the third most used social network (Facebook being the largest, followed by MySpace),[3] which puts the number of unique monthly visitors at roughly 6 million and the number of monthly visits at 55 million.[3] In March 2009, a Nielsen.com blog ranked Twitter as the fastest growing site in the Member Communities category for February 2009. Twitter had a growth of 1382%, Zimbio had a growth of 240%, followed by Facebook with a growth of 228%
