Rumor: Windows Mobile 7.0 to RTM April 2010

According to a new rumor that outlines a few Windows Mobile dates, Windows Mobile users have a lot coming down the pipeline in the next 18 months. The bad news is that Motorola's slip up saying Windows Mobile 7 is coming in 2010 was correct; the good news is that testers will be able to play with beta builds later this year. The first Windows Mobile 6.5 devices will start to appear in the second half of 2009 and right after they do, Microsoft will start letting testers play with Windows Mobile 7.

More specifically, ZDNet claims the timeline for Windows Mobile 6.5 is going to be the following:

  • Windows Mobile 6.5 RTM (release to manufacturing): April 2009

  • First Windows Mobile 6.5 devices from cell phone makers: September 2009

  • Windows Mobile 7.0 release to testers: November 2009

  • First Windows Mobile 7.0 devices from cell phone makers: April 2010

Microsoft hasn't nailed down a feature set for Windows Mobile 7 yet, but we do know that Zune will be playing a part and that many applications will be rewritten. Microsoft claims that Windows Mobile is poised for a big comeback and whether that is true or not will start being verified in two weeks, when 6.5 and accompanying cloud services are unveiled in Barcelona.

Speaking of Windows Mobile, developers might be interested in three new downloads that appeared on the Microsoft Download Center this week: SDK for Windows Mobile 2003-based Smartphones, Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys, and Windows Mobile 6 Localized Emulator Images.
